When I saw the trailer for The Bates Motel I knew I’d have to see it. I am a big fan of Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) and was intrigued to see what they had done with the story.
The Bates Motel (No Spoilers)
Firstly I will say that this is an adult programme and not really suitable for children or those with a nervous disposition. It does have violent/adult/horror themes.
Secondly, I don’t think it matters whether you know anything about the story or characters before watching this show. In fact, I think the fact I know a lot about the film means that I see red herrings. Which I admit, I like. It means I will keep being surprised
The first episode starts really well. From the offset, the style and mood are set immediately so I could just follow wherever the story was going to take me. As I don’t want to give any spoilers, I also don’t want to give any information that could ruin the experience for you who want to see it yourselves. So all I will say about that is that after watching the first episode, I am hooked!
Freddie Highmore plays Norman Bates and his performance is remarkable. You might remember him from such films as Tim Burton’s ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Finding Neverland’. He’s great at playing the character and really reminds me of Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates) in Psycho (1960), with that charming innocence and the hints of darkness.
I’m now excited for the next episode and to see where they take the story and characters throughout the series. If you want to see the trailer it is available on Youtube.com. Have you seen it? What did you think?
