Summer has finally decided to grace us with some sunshine, which I always love. The sunny mornings and longer days are very welcome. Even if they are few and far between at the moment in the UK. But this may change, fingers crossed, and there are great films with Summer or Sun in their title.
So, just like the weather makes me smile so too does a Summer movie or two and there are five great Summer Sunshine Movies to watch.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
With an All-star cast, Little Miss Sunshine is a story about a family on a road trip to The Little Miss Sunshine Pagent. Sounds simple, but the journey they take together is far more important and dramatic.
With lots of laughs, heartfelt moments you get carried away with the story and the characters. If you haven’t seen it already, you may have heard of the film when it was winning awards. It became an instant favourite of mine and I’d definitely recommend seeing it.
Written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle you know it’s going to be a great film. The Sun is dying and you meet the crew while they are on a mission to save Earth and reignite the Sun.
But a lot can happen on the trip to the Sun. With hints of the Horror genre, this Sci-Fi movie packs a lot of punch.
You may recognise Alex Garland from Ex-Machina. Another film I highly recommend.
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004)
I have previously mentioned this film in my 5… Jim Carrey Films That You May Have Missed post. It’s one of my personal favourites. The basic idea that you can erase a painful memory and the big question of whether you should and the implications of that decision. But this heartfelt and funny story is told in a compelling and visually stunning way.
Empire of The Sun (1987)
Okay, so this isn’t a Beach movie. But Empire of The Sun is a film that packs a lot in. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring, among other great actors, a very young Christian Bale.
About a boy living in Japan when WW2 breaks out, it may not be a movie about a group of friends growing up during the summer. But it is about a boy finding his way through incredibly difficult circumstances. A real must-see.
500 Days of Summer (2009)
500 Days of Summer is not a love story. It’s a story about love.
Beautifully made this film is not a typical Rom-Com. Its story is bright, funny, and sincere about when Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) met Summer (Zooey Deschanel).
