Today is Valentines Day. I have never been a big Valentine’s Day kinda person, but I do think it’s a great excuse to spend time with friends and those you love. A good night in with good people, good food and something good on the telly. So, naturally, I had to share 5 Great Movies for a Night in that all share the common theme of love. But not necessarily in the way, you’d expect.
If you’re in the mood for a musical, then Moulin Rouge is a good one to watch. Set at the turn of the century in Paris, but with modern pop music chopped and changed to aid the storytelling. It’s gorgeous to look at and has some great tunes. Definitely, something to get the room talking, laughing and singing.
Moulin Rouge (2001)
The Action Film
A film that made an instant impression, John Wick is a man with a strong reputation amongst his peers. Throwing himself head first into a personal mission. This is a fun and clever film to watch with people with different tastes. If you’ve had enough of watching Die Hard, then this is a great film to watch instead.
John Wick (2014)
Whoever said animation is just for kids wasn’t watching enough of them. Wall-E reminds me a lot of Charlie Chaplin films. It’s incredibly well made and very clever as it tells the story without a lot of the traditional methods of today’s films. Wall-E is sweet, funny, and draws you in immediately. Even if you’ve seen it before, it’s an enjoyable watch for everyone.
This may have originally been sold as an action film, but that’s not all that I saw watching it. Yes, Arnie is at his usual tricks fighting the bad guys at the very beginning and hiding his exploits from his family. But very quickly you meet his wife, Jamie Curtis, who’s having her own covert life.
The trailer hides the spoilers I’m trying not to tell you in case it’s a new film to you and the trailer also undersells Curtis’ performance. She really makes this film what it is and her character has a much bigger part to play than is being told in the trailer.
Another film that’s great to watch with a group of people who may all be looking for something different from a film.
True Lies (1994)
The Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Thriller & Everything in between
If you just can’t decide on whether you want a Romance, a Fantasy or a Horror. Or, in fact, any genre of film for the night. A film like, Paris, Je t’aime, is a great option.
Different stories, told by Directors such as Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Gravity), Wes Craven (Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street) and The Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men, Fargo), across the different districts of Paris.
All the short films are about five minutes long and intertwine with the theme of the city. Great as a whole piece and all the parts working well as their own short films. It’s a fun way to watch a movie as it fits so much into a small period of time. The pace works well and it’s great to watch with friends as you can laugh together and cry together. With a heartwarming centre that’ll stay with you at the end of the night.
